The Land Developed by Its Forebears
At the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912), the borders between the feudal domains in Japan disappeared. Bungo Ono has many difficult geographical features, but the city's forebears developed the land and built river ferryboat routes and irrigation canals. And by expanding the Hohi railway line and building a road system, industries such as agriculture, forestry, and mining were able to grow.
