Main Exhibition Room: The Huge Eruption of the Aso Volcano 90,000 Years Ago
Learn about the Formation of Bungo Ono
The fourth huge eruption of the Aso Volcano caused a massive pyroclastic flow. The pyroclastic flow spread across much of Kyushu, leaving a thick layer of deposits in the area that is now Bungo Ono. When this cooled and hardened, it formed a type of rock called "welded tuff" (or "ignimbrite").
ZONE 1 describes the characteristics of the land of Bungo Ono that was formed by repeated pyroclastic flows and the formation process, and also features exhibits of actual welded tuff.
